Duluth Merchants Association members were in good spirits at the Duluth Fine Wine & Spirits Super Store for the May DMA meeting. Networking and wine tasting DO mix.
Owners of Duluth Fine Wine & Spirits Super Store, Sharon, Bernard and Gareth Robertson have been a part of the Duluth community for the past 13 years. While their welcoming superstore on Peachtree Industrial offers large selections of liquors, cognacs, whiskeys, beers, etc, their love of wine is obvious. They opened their Duluth “The Crush Tasting Room” where they offer educational wine tasting on a regular basis, and a place to try out some new vintages. They assist their customers in finding just the perfect wine for any occasion, and a “wine of the month” club for fellow wine enthusiasts is in the works…stay tuned!
As active DMA members for the past 9 years, Sharon, Bernard and Gareth have hosted a DMA meeting each year, and this year was another example of their wonderful hospitality. Fine wine and tasty food led to enjoyable camaraderie and business networking among the many DMA members and visitors who attended.
Several members highlighted upcoming community events including the Barefoot in the Park fine arts event at the Town Green this weekend. DMA member Kathryn Willis reminded us of the need for more sponsors for the 2012 Duluth Fall Festival, now in its 30th year—a permanent part of the Duluth Community!
And Duluth Economic Development Manager Chris McGahee presented a positive outlook for Duluth, noting several businesses that are moving to Duluth, road construction which is improving our roads, and new entertainment venues which are bringing more folks and potential business to the community.
Discussion with DMA Board Member Jenny Wesselmann and visitor Clayton Lee, both VPs of the Korean-American Chamber of Commerce around hosting a joint trade show in the fall were well received by the DMA members.
DMA Member Don Kemp of Guardian reminded everyone he will be hosting the first DMA Brown Bag event at The Work Spot on June 6th, free to DMA members. Don’s presentation will be focused on retirement planning.
The meeting ended on a personal note, honoring the three DMA members who became proud grandpas in April. Baby pictures were shared via cell phone and a toast was raised. “Good health to all!” It was a good night.
Our next Cash Mob will be held at Kurt’s Restaurant for Monday April 16th at 5:00 pm!
There will be 1/2 price appetizers, a $4 featured draft imported beer, and 10% discount for those that decide to stay and enjoy dinner.
Don’t forget to bring your cash, your friends, and your business cards for some great networking opportunities!

NO 2012 STARS & STRIPES 5K RUN/WALK !!!
DMA has decided it must cancel the 2012 Stars and Stripes 5K Run/Walk. Low runner participation for the past two years has made this event not economically feasible.
Thanks to all DMA members and friends for your past support…we hope the run can return in the future!
It was a balmy spring evening on April 3rd, when leaders of the Duluth Merchants Association encouraged local DMA member businesses to “expose” themselves and their product/services for all the world to see. The show was followed by applause; cameras flashed, and Video cameras rolled. Names and phone numbers were exchanged.
You guessed it! This was the first Duluth Merchants Association Mini Expo. Held at the Duluth Festival Center on the Town Square. DMA member businesses flaunted their goods and services. Eight foot vertical banners framed creative display tables, offering promotional give-a-ways and enticements. Handshakes and business cards flew around the room. The Positive Public Image monitor looped its colorful images and Duluth Patch DMA blogs for the pleasure of entertained and informed guests. Friendships and “Business-ships” were crafted.
Everyone enjoyed tasty Southern delights provided by caterer and DMA member Lynda Alley of Duluth Rexall Grill.
The audience included fellow DMA members, invited and distinguished guests, city officials, and potential new members wanting to get in on the fun. Exhibitors included:
Don’t worry if you missed the gala event. Since it was highly successful, Duluth Merchants Association and friends are planning Expos quarterly. Attendance is open to the public, but you must be a member to exhibit.
Become a DMA member and you too can “expose” yourself and your business for the Duluth Community and all the world to see. Just think, four times a year you’ll have an opportunity to stand side by side with your favorite local business, share business cards, get your picture taken, and bring positive attention to your business. Work on your presentation pitch. Gather your collateral, and get ready to join the fun. It’s good for your business, and good for the local economy.

…………….
Each month Positive Public Image (PPI) publishes articles on behalf of DMA, and below you will find 3 different links to the article we wrote about this particular event, entitled “Cash Mob Descends on Local Community.” This article was published on the PPI website, the PPI Facebook page, PPI LinkedIn, the DMA Facebook page, the DMA Member News Page, and the on line community newspaper, the Duluth Patch.
When DMA members have an active relationship with DMA, they are more apt to appear in one of the many DMA articles and videos written and published by PPI. These articles–and those DMA members or businesses mentioned in the articles–become instantly searchable on Google…usually within 30 minutes of article publishing! This SEO optimization has been PPI’s primary focus since last August, for both PPI clients and for DMA, and it has paid off. Google requires continual volume input for one source before the Google algo-rhythms will pay much attention; it takes months of daily/weekly on line article submissions through multiple channels by a business to get similar results with Google. All DMA members benefit from this partnership of jointly promoting our businesses through DMA.
If you know you were mentioned in a DMA article, then please try doing a Google search of yourself: enter “your name” followed by “DMA” (example: Glen Sarver DMA, Vivian Eckman DMA, Jenny Wesselman DMA, etc.) You will see results pop up on your Google search.
Now back to the Cash Mob article: To give this new article more “legs” for DMA and the Members, we encourage everyone to open the links, read the article, and to also make comments on the articles on the Patch, on DMA FB Page and on DMA Member News. You can also share/post them on your FB sites, and business websites…this provides further benefits to you and your fellow DMA member businesses…it works for everyone!
If you are not sure how to do these steps, please make plans to join the Marketing Communications & PR Committee (MCPR) at the Member Training on Wed March 28th 6:30 pm at The Work Spot. We can assist in setting up shortcuts on your desktop to key locations on the internet, and also walk you through the basic steps involved for making comments and sharing/posting article links to other sites.
